Top 5 Divers’ Resolutions for The Brand New Year of 2010

By Amillson On January 2, 2010 Under Featured Content

Everybody has at least 2 or 3 different kind of resolutions laid out for the New Year. It doesn’t matter the size or the gravity or the impact of the resolutions or whether we can actually fulfill them all by the year end BUT we’ll have to live by fact that each and every resolutions, that we are going to work hard for, will require certain level of sacrifice, discipline and commitment – from all of us!

Scuba divers around the world have a few important resolutions to commit to and hopefully to fulfill them through the year of 2010. Here are the top 5 divers’ resolutions for year 2010:

1. Stay active in the divers community

Below are a few suggestions that you can follow in order to achieve this number one resolution:

a)   Learn the latest trends – you may want to subscribe to diving magazine, read publications, look up on the Internet, ask friends, hook up with Divemasters/Instructors in your area etc.

b)   Know the latest technology in divingit’s not necessary to own all them but to realize that such technologies do exist is good enough.

c)   Get updated on the ongoing nature-related-conservation projects in you area and around the globe in general.

2. Support worldwide nature conservation efforts

There are many ongoing conservation works or projects that you can support or take part in. One of them is the annual Beach Clean Up Day. Such events are normally sponsored or run by Non-Government Organizations – check with your local dive store and see what their plans are for the year 2010.

A good example of NGO carrying out such works is PADI Project AWARE Foundation – one of the nonprofit organizations working in partnership with divers and water enthusiasts around the globe to combat challenges facing underwater environments. Project AWARE and dedicated volunteers are committed to conservation initiatives including:

    • Underwater Cleanups and Marine Debris Prevention
    • Coral Reef Conservation, Monitoring and Data Collection
    • Shark Education, Reporting and Conservation
    • Improved Management Policies and Marine Protection Efforts
    • Environmental Training for Divers and Education Programs for Kids

Other projects you can support: Save The Turtle Project, Save The Sharks Projects and many more – all working towards the protection of mankind and their very existence.

3. Support local dive shop/centre/resort

Find out if there are any conservation-proactive dive shops/centers or dive resorts in your area or those that you go to every now and then. Support them if they are taking measures and initiatives to protect and conserve the underwater environment – where they make their living from – so that they, too, can share the underwater wonders with you and your next generations.

The good thing about supporting those establishments is that you can rest assured that your efforts in collaborating them will bear endless fruits of hope for OUR future – a resolution worth investing into.

There are a few ways to get involve with your local dive shops:

a)    Take part in their diving trips to local destinations or abroad

b)   Participate in their beach cleaning up day

c)    Participate in their underwater cleaning up day

d)   Pledge to support them with some of your spare time or may be in the form of fund donations if you can afford to do so.

4. Invite family & friends – a.k.a. the Diving F&F Programme

Just like your local telecommunication service providers’ offers for their “F&F” programmes – you get cheaper rates, to make calls, to send sms/mms etc. when you sign up for one of their many attractive packages.

Apply the same F&F concept in diving and you too can get a cheaper way to get your family and friends to signup for scuba diving certifications. Ultimately invite them to take part in the global effort to conserve the underwater world and the whole ecosystem, that we are living in, in general.

Encourage your F&Fs by feeding them with accurate facts, most current news, trends, ongoing projects, coming trips and so on. Those sorts of information are important to keep them interested and hopefully to put them on track.

5. Respect local laws and regulations

So what does divers’ New Year’s resolution have to do with respecting the laws and regulations? Simple: Being a law-abiding-citizen means you are walking a free-man-lifestyle. At the same time those very laws will also protect you.

So where are we going from here? Well, divers or otherwise, respecting the law means you are keeping yourself active and available in the divers community – you won’t be available if you are serving terms right?

Respect local laws and regulations on any diving excursions too. Observe and abide by them when diving on underwater wrecks or coral reefs, when walking or diving in National Parks, when staying at resorts or hotels, when riding on dive boats or diving from liveaboards and so on.

Learn to live in harmony with nature – respect them even though you are not required by human law to do so.

Look after your health – keep mentally and physically fit (avoid doing any types of vise – its against the law as we all know it).

Work hard to uplift your life standard through honest way of obtaining income (don’t rob others – you may not like it if others rob you of your properties and dignity).

See if any of these top 5 divers’ resolutions match yours. Otherwise you may include any one of these Top 5 List in your own list of resolutions for the year 2010.

Let us all work hard and hopefully, through our continuos effort and support, we can see the positive results by the end of this year.

Goodbye 2009. Let’s dive into the new beginning: Welcome 2010.
