Top 5 Reasons Why You Should Become A Divemaster

By Amillson On October 27, 2009 Under People & Culture, SCUBA

If you are complete stranger to scuba diving, to consider yourself to get trained and eventually become a certified diving professional might be an alien thoughts. Why would you? What are the reasons to consider?

Just like any other jobs that you are venturing into, knowing what you can get out of it is very important. Whether its going to be a short term or long term plan – its your career that we are talking about here.

So, why should you become a Divemaster?

Reason#1 Work For The Biggest Office In The World

The divers’ office is the biggest office so far in the world. You don’t believe? Look at how big the area covered with water. Its 2/3 of the whole planet: that is the biggest “office”.

As a qualified Divemaster, you can travel and dive the deep blue sea at any time you like, anyway you want: it’s your call. As one of the member of the biggest office in the world, you are always looked at as an important asset; a duty and responsibility well respected by many.

Remember, we are not talking about real physical office here: with fax machine humming the whole day, telephone ringing almost every second, with bosses plastering their eyes on you to make you uneasy, hot juicy gossips going around and so on. This is a natural office we are talking about. An office of nature. Yours to own and make living out of it. All yours for the taking.

Reason#2 Living A Dream Lifestyle

How about living a dream lifestyle? Here is a typical Divemaster’s day: wake up in the morning, head for the restaurant for breakfast, check the weather if OK to go out or not – if not, stay indoor (hahahahah… sometimes), go and do the first dive, come back and have more coffee or tea while talking about the dive and the fishes they saw, dive again and come back for lunch, take an almost 2 hours afternoon nap, go for another dive, come back and you are done for today. Sounds too good to be true?

I’ve lived that life. And still living that life… once a diver, you stay as a diver. Better yet as a Divemaster :)

How about working for years in your favorite board shorts and flip-flops – that’s Divemasters lifestyle. Well sometimes you might need to put on that staff uniform; just to be in the herd.

Reason#3 Qualified Educators

The moment you get hold of that Divemaster ticket, you can now be called an expert – an educator. Overtime, you will enhance or sharpen your scuba skills and abilities because you’ll have all the time you need to do so – at your own pace while living those dream life style.

Professional divers will have every opportunity to help others by providing positive feedbacks, offering sound judgments on any diving related matters, be proactive in the industry and to become a role model to others. It’s an overwhelming feeling or sensation when people look up at you as a professional.

A word of caution: don’t get to much overwhelmed though – don’t get carried away. Lol.

Reason#4  Become A Role Model

Yes I know that I mentioned this already BUT we can elaborate more on this particular subtopic.

No matter where you are working at, in this world, you will always be part of the rare people, the rare species, who live and make living out of scuba diving. As a consequences, your reputation as a professional will always become a role model towards other people - it doesn’t matter if they are divers or not.

People admire professionals of every walk of discipline or field of activities. These people trust their time and money, without hesitations, to you because they believe in the quality of your product and services – including safety – which you can provide for them.

To be able to maintain a good role model means you’ll be able to contribute, to sustain and to preserve the overall good image of the diving community and industry in particular.

Reason#5 An Upgradeable Career

Imagine a career you can upgrade to the highest level at your own pace. Whenever you want it and wherever you want to get it done. There is no way I’ve heard anything like this before. Well, unless you are a business owner.

Have a look at the PADI continuing education chart for example. You will see that Divemaster is the first professional level in scuba diving and Instructor levels are available for their (Divemaster) career upgrades. The training schedules are flexible: meaning you can sign up for the course at any time you wish to.

You’ll be able to create more buzz, more connections, and more advancement opportunity and so on when you reach the instructor levels. The ever-developing diving industry worldwide requires many diving professionals to cater the demand. It is growing by the second. The door is open wide. Enter to find out more.
